HBO. Starz. Showtime. We've all heard about these premium channels for years. They show movies - hundreds of movies every month. And while that in and of itself is more than enough reason to subscribe to these great premium channels, but if you don't subscribe to them, you'll be missing a LOT of programming that simply is not available anywhere else. Period.

While all of the movies will eventually wind up airing on each of the channels eventually, there is a lot of shows and specials that will only air on one premium channel or the other. All three of these premium channels have their own exclusive shows. Not only is each channel well known for hosting certain events and specials, but they are also know for original series programming as well. Some mainstream TV shows actually started on one of the premium channels as original programming for that channel.

As an example of that, "Stargate" originated as a movie in the theaters starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. Richard Dean Anderson (best known as MacGyver) developed, starred in and produced an original series based on that movie titled "Stargate SG-1" that made its debut on Showtime and ran for several years before migrating over to the Sci-Fi (now Sy-Fy) channel.

HBO is best known for special events like boxing, and sports shows like "Inside the NFL" as well as other great comedy specials, music events and other original programming that just can't be shown on "regular" TV because of content. Showtime also has great original programs and is also well known for fantastic specials and behind the scenes mini-documentaries and interviews. Starz has its own brand of original programming and specials as well, and unless mainstream channels pick up options to broadcast reruns, the only places you'll ever see any of these fantastic original shows and specials will only be on HBO, Starz or Showtime.

And when you subscribe to HBO, Starz, and Showtime, you're not just adding three premium channels, but three complete tiers of channels. Adding all three will add at least 29 channels to your line-up. Several of the channels are specifically geared to specialty audiences like kids with HBO Kids and Starz Kids and Family, or for the Spanish speaking community HBO Latino adds even more value. Having channels with predominate comedy programming, like HBO Comedy or action programming like Showtime Extreme, gives viewers easy choices to make for an evening's entertainment.

And while we all know the "big three" names- HBO, Showtime and Starz, other well known names like The Movie Channel, FLIX and Sundance are also a part of the channels that are added when you subscribe. Not only do you get current movie releases, but you also get past hits and other fantastic movies on these channels.

Let's face it. Having a lot of channels is a great thing because you can always find something to watch. Having channels like those in the HBO, Starz, and Showtime lineup adds so much more to watch -- you may have to have two TVs in order to see everything you want! Definitely makes having a digital video recorder a great thing to have.
