The car doesn't stop. Or it won't until it runs into something. And that usually isn't a very good way to stop. What that grinding sensation means is the rivets that hold the brake pads together are actually cutting into the drums or discs. You will end up having to replace the discs or drums along with the brake pads if you don't immediately have them checked. Instead of just replacing the brake pads at a reasonably inexpensive price, you will have to have brake repair that could end up being very expensive. Plus, when the brakes get that worn it does affect your gas mileage. Your car will end up using more gas to get you from one point to the next since your car is working harder because the worn brakes can start dragging on the drum or disc.

You should have your brakes checked regularly. Not only is it safer for you and those around you but it saves money.
